Our 2021 Home Building Trend Predictions
Every new year brings exciting developments in the home building industry. With so many people spending more time at home, we’ve started to see a shift in the homeowner vision and what the future of dream homes will include.
As the year begins, we’ve created a list of what we think our upcoming new builds and remodeling projects will incorporate. Here are our builder predictions for home building trends in 2021!
Future Planning & Multi-Generational Homes
2020 was an example for many on how quickly things can change in our everyday lives and how it pays to be prepared for the future. With more clients bringing additional family members into their home, future planning has become increasingly crucial. Requests for additional space, spare rooms, and modular solutions are growing. Designing multi-generational sections on floor plans, such as mother-in-law suites, and separated guest houses have become popular conversation topics among our clients. The importance of every home occupant having their own privacy and independence is key to an optimized and functional home.

Open-Concept Spaces That Lead to the Outdoors
You won’t be surprised to see that open-concept spaces, especially kitchens, are here to stay for the next year; however, we are seeing more opportunities to build open-concept areas that lead to outdoor spaces for our clients.
Incorporating bi-folding accordion-style doorways from the kitchen and dinging to an outdoor patio has been the highlight of a few recent and upcoming projects. These innovative transitional spaces are great for entertaining, creating more natural light, and bringing scenic and expansive views into your home.
Making the Most of Your Backyard with Patios & Pools
Speaking of the outdoors, there has never been a better time to make use of the backyard. With limited options to get out of the house, well-designed and functional backyard spaces have shifted to priority. We’re seeing more requests for entertainment areas, custom-built grilling and outdoor dining spaces -- and of course swimming pools!
By working with our team from the very beginning of designing your home, we are able to not only properly place your home on the lot for maximized use of backyard space, but we are also able to design proper allocations within your home for optimal functionality. For example, creating pathways conducive to wet spaces and lower level bathrooms.
More Storage For Every Room
You can never have too much storage space, nothing new there, but when it comes to where homeowners are looking for that extra organization you can bet it starts in the kitchen. Recently we have been incorporating additional preparation kitchens to our upcoming builds. This separate kitchen space allows more opportunity for functionality and organization with the added storage of shelving, cabinetry and space for those kitchen appliances you want out-of-view. They also keep your main kitchen area aesthetically pleasing and minimal.
Bigger closets are also in-style. Enough space to hold your entire yearly wardrobe with optimal custom organization is a must for many of our clients.
A Focus on Home Offices
Home offices have also become a focal point of planning discussions with our team. With more clients working strictly from home, designing a functional and aesthetically pleasing office is a key element in making part of your everyday lifestyle extraordinary.
Predicted additions to many of our home offices this year will be stone fireplaces, custom storage and shelving with beautiful woodgrains, wall coverings, and large windows.
Going Green
More of our clients are investing in creating eco-friendly, energy-efficient homes. We’ve seen how far the homebuilding industry has come with the evolution of their sustainable and renewable options and products. If going green is important to you and your family’s lifestyle, we ensure you it is important to us! Whether you are looking to source sustainable housing materials, add solar panels, or create more energy efficiency with smart home automations we have the expertise you need on how to make informed and affordable “green” decisions.

Athletic Courts & Exercise Rooms
Last but definitely not least, one of the highest demands for lower level room allocation is to incorporate athletic courts and exercise rooms. There’s no better way for your kids to expend some of that cooped-up energy than a dedicated space to let loose. Parents are also needing an isolated space to expend energy and work out. A tricked-out exercise room with speakers, mirrors, smart technology and special flooring is a high priority on many of our clients wish list.
Bringing the latest innovation the industry has to offer is an exciting and rewarding aspect of our work at Swanson Homes.
